PMKVY 4.0 and Future Skills

The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) is a flagship scheme of the Indian Government aimed at providing skill-based training and certification to the youth. Recently, the scheme was in the news when the Finance Minister in the Union Budget speech said “Under PMKVY 4.0, on-job training, industry partnership, and alignment of courses with needs of industry will be emphasised,” The Minister further said. “The scheme will also cover new-age courses for Industry 4.0 like coding, AI, robotics, mechatronics, IOT, 3D printing, drones, and soft skills.”

The FM rightfully mentioned strengthening the industry connect and introduction of future skills in PMKVY 4.0, India's latest version of the skills development program. The development and refinement of these niche future technologies is the job of people possessing higher level of education and skills; however, it is the "application" of these skills which falls under the preview of programs like the PMKVY.

It is thus prudent for the Awarding Bodies to think through and develop occupational standards or courses focused on the "application" of these skills in the respective sectors. The benefits will be immense, not just limited to gaining insights into customer behaviour; improved decision making;  protect and secure data and networks; increase efficiency, accuracy, monitoring and control of manufacturing processes; customized manufacturing and better prototyping; provide remote healthcare; manage and analyse patient data for better diagnosis and treatment; improve customer satisfaction and loyalty; optimize supply chain management and reduce costs; provide seamless shopping experience; better destination management and  improve visitor experience and tourist satisfaction, reduce impact on environment and local communities, need based irrigation and better pest control etc ,, the list is ongoing, cutting across all sector like IT&ITES, Manufacturing, Healthcare, Tourism, Logistics, Retail, Agriculture and others.

These are just a few examples of how future skills can be applied in key sectors of the economy. By incorporating these skills, companies and individuals can stay ahead in a rapidly changing technological landscape and achieve success in their respective fields.

PMKVY 4.0 is set to open new vistas. Success, however, will depend on execution; on imposing an effective and efficient no compromise Quality Assurance Mechanism at all levels from selection of potential trainees to training to assessments. The focus for these skills must shift from counting numbers to achieving quality.

  1. Training Centres must invest high amount to implement this courses (Industry 4.0 ,coding, AI, robotics, mechatronics, IOT, 3D printing, drones).. As on day very few training partners are providing this courses.
